Road bike of my wife - 妻のハンドメイドロードバイク

This is my wife's steel road I made last year. She used to ride a road bike of a manufacture, but it didn't fit well. So I decided to design and make a new one for her. I chose the material first, steel. Steel is a good material for her riding style and makes her comfortable.

There was a problem in the process of design. That was the top tube (TT) had to be shorter because her arm length was shorter than average women. That is to say, it was a bit hard to adjust the relation among TT length, head angle, and seat angle.

However, I could manage the problem and make a pretty light weight frame, finally. (Actual frame weight is 2.9lbs(1.3kg))

This time, I did everything not only design and manufacturing, also painting.

去年作った妻のロードバイクです。元々、あるメーカーのバイクに乗っていたのですが、イマイチフィットしませんでした。そういうわけで、彼女にジャストフィットなロードバイクを作ろうと思い立ちました。

材料はスチール、彼女のバイクとしてはgood choiceでした。　

ただ、設計の段階で一つ問題がありました。というのは、彼女は一般的な女性よりも腕が短いのでトップチューブの長さをかなり短くしなければならなかったことです。トップチューブを短くし、かつフロントセンター（ＢＢ中心からフォークのアクスル中心までの距離）を十分に確保する必要がありました。（フロントセンターが短すぎるとペダルを水平位置にしハンドルを切った際に、つま先が前車輪に引っかかる。）　要するに、トップチューブ長とヘッドアングルとシートアングルの関係を調整するのに少し手間取りました。しかし、最終的には上手く調整し、フレーム重量も１．３ｋｇとかなり軽く仕上げることが出来ました。ちなみに、今回はペイントまで全て自分で行いました。

26 inch, Disk break, Road component, Drop handle - ２６インチ、ディスクブレーキ、ロードコンポーネントバイク

“26インチ、Diskブレーキ、ロード用コンポーネント、ドロップハンドル。”　なにやら不思議な感じのバイクです。26インチ、Disk ブレーキ、ここまでならマウンテンバイクを想像できますが、その次、ロード用コンポーネントとドロップハンドルとくると、ロードバイクを想像します。実は、この不思議なバイクが前回の妻のバイクの次に作った自分用の通勤、街乗り仕様の自転車です。（6/2008）

“Disk ブレーキ仕様でロードバイク的な使い方ができるタフなバイク”これが自分の求めるバイクでした。デザインする時に、まず最初に決まっていたことは、Disk ブレーキを使う、ということでした。過去に使ったことがなかったので、一度使ってみたい、という思いがありました。次に、バイクのタイプ。単純に速く走れるバイクであればロードバイクでいいのですが、ボストンの路面状況は良くないのでもう少しタフなバイクの方が実際、通勤、街乗りで楽しめるバイクになるだろうということでロードバイク以外の選択をすることにしました。一方、MTB はどうかというと、野山を走るわけではないのでそこまでのタフさは必要なく、またギヤ比の点から見ても決して速いバイクにはならないということでMTB も選択外になりました。またシクロクロスバイクは？というと、カンチブレーキを使用したくなかったのでこれも選択外になりました。結果、ロードバイクとMTBの要素をミックスすることにしました。

次に車輪のサイズですが、2つの理由を考えて26インチを選択しました。第1の理由は、29インチよりも26インチのほうが、リムやタイヤサイズの種類が多く選択肢が豊富なことです。第2の理由としては、GO and STOPが多い街中では26インチの方が軽い漕ぎ出しとともに軽快感を楽しむことができる、ということからでした。
また、ロード用コンポーネント、ドロップハンドル、この二点は速く走らせるために必要なものでした。あくまでロードバイク的な走りの要素は残したかったからです。
したがってフレーム、フォークの設計ではロードバイクを基準とし、26インチDisk ブレーキ仕様でタイヤ幅1.00－1.75の範囲で使用可能、そして26インチの車輪サイズで高速走行しても安定感を損なわないフレーム、フォークをデザインしました。

さて、出来上がったバイクに乗った感想はというと、満足のひと言です。実に気持ちよく、ストレスなく走らせることができるバイクに仕上がりました。街乗り、通勤、さらにはツーリングといった状況でもしっかり楽しめるバイクです。

“26inches, Disk-break, Road component, Drop handle.” It sounds strange. If I say ‘26inches and Disk- break’ you may imagine mountain bikes, but ‘Road component, Drop handle?’ It makes you imagine road bikes. This unique bike is the bike that I made for my commuting and city riding.

“A tough bike with disk-break. But I can ride on it as I do on a road bike.” This is the bike I wanted to make. I already decided to use disk-break before I designed the bike because I had wanted to try it and I had never used it before. If I just had fast ride, I would make a road bike. However, the road condition in Boston is not good, so I thought I would be able to enjoy my ride with a tougher one especially in the city. Thus, a road bike was not my choice. Then, what about MTB? It was not, either because it was too tough and not a fast bike. Also, I did not choose a cyclocross bike because I did not want to have canti-break. I concluded that I would make the one mixed” ROAD and MTB”.

As for wheel size, I chose 26-inch wheel. There were two reasons. First, I can choose a more variety of parts for 26-inch than 29-inch. Second, I can pedal lightly with 26-inch rather than 29-inch if I ride in the city. (You have to go and stop many times in the city.)
I also needed road components and a drop handle to ride faster.

Therefore, I designed the frame and fork with road dimension and assembled with 26-inch wheel (tire size 1.00-1.75) and disk-break.

I tried giving for a ride and I have been satisfied with my new bike. I believe this bike could be an ideal one for city ride, commuting, and touring.

26 inch? Cyclocross? 26インチ、シクロクロスバイク

今から2年程前のことになりますが、アメリカに来てすぐに、日本からわざわざ持ってきた妻のバイクが盗まれてしまいました。かなりショックな出来事でしたが、それをきっかけに新しいバイクを作ることにしました。（2008年6月）
まずは、彼女の股下や腕の長さを測り、それを元に、彼女の身体に最適なフレームの寸法を導いていきます。それから、そのフレームデザインに相応しいパイプを選択。そして、パイプをカットし、溶接していきます。もちろん、全て自分で行いました。

出来上がってみると、なかなか面白いバイクになりました。フレーム素材はチタン。ドロップハンドルなのに、車輪の径は26インチ（MTB 用）。こういうバイクは、他ではほとんど見かけません。
作る際に、26インチにするか、700Ｃの車輪にするか、悩みました。イメージとして、シクロクロスバイクが頭の中にありましたので普通は700Ｃを選ぶべきでしたが、妻の体型では少し大きすぎるので26インチを選択しました。しかし、ハンドルはドロップタイプにすることにしました。
街乗りだけならドロップハンドルにする必要はないかもしれませんが、週末は、40キロ程度のサイクリングに出かけることが多いので、中距離を走っても疲れにくいようにドロップハンドルを組み込みました。見た目もクールかな、と。それから、チタン素材は、しなやかさがあるので彼女でもペダリングを楽しむことができます。

買い物に、外出に、何かと自転車で出かけることが多い彼女も、新しいバイクに大満足の様子。というか、普段乗りにはもったいないぐらいの、スペシャルなバイクなんだけど、、、。その辺、分かってるのか、分かってないのか、、。まぁ、自分としては、新しいバイクをゼロから考えて作ることが楽しいので良しとしておきます。ちなみに、自分用の街乗り、通勤用バイクも同時に作ったのですが、それについてはまた次回。

My wife’s bike, which we brought from Japan, was stolen soon after we had moved to the United States.US. It was a terrible incident and we were really shocked, but I decided to make a new bike. (6/2008)
I first measured her body –the length of upper body, her legs, and arms-, and found out the best measurement. . Then I designed the drawings for a frame, front folk, and so on. After finishing design, I chose proper tubes, cut them, and welded them… Of course, I did all the process.

It turned out the bike I built was quite interesting. The material is titanium. The bike has a drop handle although it has 26-inch-Mtn wheels. I have hardly seen such a bike so far.
I considered carefully which to take either 26inch or 700c for the wheel size. I had an image of cyclocross bicycle in my mind. Cyclocross bikes usually have 700c wheels, but they are slightly too big for her to ride, so I chose 26inch wheels. Nevertheless, this bike still has a drop handle bar.
It may be unnecessary to have a drop bar if she only rides around the city. But we often go for a ride to suburb areas on the weekends. She wanted to have a drop bar on the bike because she can ride for a long distance without feeling much exhaustion with it. Maybe it also looks cool. Titanium is a really good material for her bike because it is elastic. You can enjoy your pedaling.

She seems to be satisfied with the new bike whenever she goes out. It is actually too great to ride for daily use. I wonder if she understands the worth of this bike… Anyway, I had tons of fun to make a new bike from scratch –from drawing to building, so it is OK.
When making this bike, I made mine, too. I will post it next time.
