Ellis Cycles (http://www.elliscycles.com/index.html). Many people know about this shop. I have seen many kinds of lugged steel bikes. I think his work is one of the best ones. His work is definitely beautiful. I also feel his clean, beautiful mind through his work. He also has a great design sense. He may want to make beautiful things... I am impressed when I see something which has something more over a great craftsmanship.

Ellis Cycles。ラグドスティールの世界では多くの人に知られている。これまで、日本はもちろん、さまざまなこういったクラシックバイクを見てきたが、自分の中ではEllis はベストな中の一つ。
職人的に素晴らしい仕事をしているところは結構あるが、彼はそれだけではなく、デザイン的センスも素晴らしいと思う。オリジナルラグのカットデザインやD.O のくり貫きの形状などなどセンスを感じる。（ゴテゴテすぎて気色悪ささえ感じてしまうようなものもこの世界ではあるが）
彼のフレームを通して彼のクリーンな心（？）、美しいものを作りたいという気持ちがよく伝わってくる。
職人的な技術のみでなく+α のセンスを持った（あるいは磨かれた）ものを見たときに、僕は感動する。

Frame builder 2

When I design a bike, when I decide a tube for a customer,,, I first check the customer's information (Every fitters do it, too.). But I am a frame builder. Also I always build a frame in my head before it is built. (Maybe this way is from my past experience (architect). I make a little story between the customer and a bike.)
I follow all the processes from touch a tube to adjust the alignment after welding with my tactil information(?) through my experience. I imagine clearly about the tubing character and frame stiffness, softness...
That is a frame builder's work, I believe.

カスタマーのフレーム設計をするとき、チュービングを設定するとき、カスタマーから得た情報を基に行う。。。と、これはいわゆるフィッター（フィッティングをする人）がみなやることである。当然自分もする。
しかし、自分はいつも実際のフレームが出来る以前にフレームを頭の中で作ってしまう。これが私独自（？）の方法。これは建築設計をしていたときの手法からきているかもしれない。そのカスタマーとバイクとの間に小さなストーリーを作成する。

それは、一本のチューブをつかみ、加工し、溶接、アライメントの調整までやるものである。そのイメージの中でチューブ自体の硬さ、やわらかさ、そしてフレームになったときの芯とりなどを通してその剛性など全て思い描く。実際思い描けてしまう。　そして出来上がったそのバイクに乗っているカスタマーを（その情報とともに）出来うる限り鮮明に（？）イメージする。。。
マニアックというか、職業病というか、、、。でもフレームビルダーはそういうものだと思う。逆にカスタマーの情報のみでチューブを加工した事もないようなフィッターと呼ばれている（時にはデザイナーと呼ばれているが、、、）人達が、チュービングについて語り、カスタマーのチューブをそつなく決めてしまうというのが自分には理解できないのだが。

The 10th year effort!? This frame does not have any distortion (after welding). I finally got understand something(?) through my body (experience), not only the theory... From today, my 10th year career as a frame builder just started.

１０年目の成果であろうか？今日溶接したこのフレーム、ねじれ、歪みなどのギャップはほぼゼロだった。フレームアライメントの修正一切不要。
やっと分かってきたか？身体（経験）を通して、理屈だけでなく。今日からこの仕事、１０年目に突入した。
