Ti tubing - チタンチューブ

Ti tubing. There are many sizes. Some advantages of Ti tubing are no corrode, strong against fatigue, long life, and so on. It is not necessary to be painted (can be painted). It's easy to be refreshed, light weight...
I also like steel tubing, but Ti tubing has a certain advantage for a bike frame. After all, Ti is a great material. I like it.

チタンチューブ。たくさんのサイズがある。チタンの利点は、腐食しない、疲労しない、ロングライフなどなど。またペイントの必要なし（もちろんペイント可能）。フレームのリフレッシュが簡単、軽量、、、。スティールも良い材料だが、バイクフレームに関してチタンには確実に利点がある。
やっぱりチタンは優れたマテリアルであると思う。

I remember I welded this frame a couple months ago. This is a co-worker's cross bike. Small size, light weight frame. The tubing set is for women's road rather than cross, but it is good for light weight riders. It will be comfortable.

2，3ヶ月前にこのフレームを溶接したのを覚えている。これは新しく入った同僚のチタンクロスバイクである。スモールサイズで軽量。そのチュービングセットはクロスというよりロード（女性用）に近い。軽量レーサーの人には良いフレームである。結構快適かもしれない。

44m head tube. About +25% stiffness and -10% weight compare to our normal head tube.
If you want to have a real Ti road racer, it should be good to have a 43mm down tube with this 44mm head tube. You could get satisfaction from the bike.

44mmヘッドチューブ。ノーマルサイズのヘッドチューブに比べて、約25%の剛性アップと10%の重量削減になる。もしピュアなチタンロードレーサーに乗りたければ、43mm径のダウンチューブとこの44mmヘッドチューブにテーパーステアリングのカーボンフォークの組み合わせが良いだろう。ほとんどの人が満足できるはずである。

There are many types of logos for a head badge. I designed a new head badge for KUALIS CYCLES.
I designed this logo with a letter K as the motif, imagining an old historical seal and not to look cheap as a brand...
A logo has an important task for a branding process. It takes time to build a brand image in people, but it becomes a symbol. Eventually, people have an image of the products immediately when they see it. It is nothing to be taken casually?

ヘッドバッジのロゴにはたくさんの種類が存在する。KUALIS CYCLES のヘッドバッジのデザインを一つ新しく考えてみた。K をモチーフに古い時代の歴史ある印章のような、ちょっとタトゥーのような、しかし下品、あるいはチープにならないようなイメージでできたものである。
ロゴは、ブランディングのプロセスにおいて一つの重要な役割を果たすものである。人々の中に一つのブランドイメージを築くには時間を要するし、またそれはひとつのシンボルにもなる。最終的には人がそのロゴを見た瞬間にすぐさまそのプロダクトに関するイメージをいだくようになる。いいかげんには考えられないなあ。（逆にいいかげんに考えて、いいものが出来る場合もあるかもしれませんけど。）

異様になが～いトップチューブである。そしてまたエアロダウンチューブ。このダウンチューブが最後になるだろう（Seven にもうストックなし、多分もう作ってもない）。フレームサイズもでかい。溶接は楽しかった。

約5年前に日本から送ったバイクパック3箱

I noticed my paper boxes for bike pack after work today. I will have been at Seven 5 years at the end of this May. So I sent them from Japan 5 years ago.
When I first came here (for an interview, 10/17/2006 and worked (without pay) 2 and half months for Seven to evaluate my ability), I was even not allowed to have a locker space. I had to change my cloth in a bathroom for a while. (I now use 2 locker spaces without a permission.) But it was a matter of no great importance for me. I just wanted to work here. (I already decided that I would work at Seven before I left Japan.)
It is going to be passed 5 years. In any case, I am truly thankful for being able to keep working here.

今日仕事を終えて家に帰ろうとしたとき、自分のバイクパックが3箱あるのを目にした。この5月いっぱいでここにきて5年になるが、それらは約5年前に日本から自分のバイクを入れてこっちに送ったときのものである。
最初にSeven を訪れたときは（面接のため、2006年10月17日、そして自分の能力をSeven が測るために2.5ヶ月無給で働いた。）一つのロッカースペースをもつことさえ許されなかった（しばらくトイレを使用してました。今は勝手に2箇所使ってます。）が、自分にとってはそのときはそんな事はどうでもよく、とにかくここで働いてやるぞとしか考えていなかった（実際、日本を出るときに既に自分はSeven で働くのだ、と決めていた。）。
それから5年が過ぎようとしている。とにもかくにも、これまでSeven で働き続けられた事に感謝をしている。（今もし、5年前と同じ様な事をやれと言われたとしたら、、、ん～、きついね。）

622 SLX - 622 SLX

622 SLX, Ti with carbon frame. It is the lightest model in Seven. About 1.0- 1.1kg. The lugs are decorated compare to Elium (Seven's another Ti, carbon model). The most characteristic part is the carbon DT. The HT is thin because a carbon tube is inserted in it later. It is a little hard to weld.
We hardly see Ti- carbon bikes now. This is a rare frame.

622 SLX, チタン＋カーボンフレーム。Seven で最も軽いモデル。約1.0～1.1kg。そのラグはElium （もう一つのチタン＋カーボンモデル）に比べてデコレート（カット）されている。そしてもう一つの違いはダウンチューブもカーボンであることである。カーボンチューブが後から挿入されるためヘッドチューブの肉厚が薄い。溶接がすこし難しい。
最近はメタル＋カーボンモデルはめっきり見なくなった。これは、そんなレアなフレームの一つである。

Ti disk CX 2 - チタンDisk クロス２

I think Disk cross bike is increasing more than before. And disk road, maybe in the future?
It will be good to have disk brake for CX bike. But I still wonder about disk road...
Road component has been simple design, light weight, and improved the capability. I understand disk brake capability is good for bicycles not only motorcycles, but the attractive points of road component are the lightness and simple capability. It is still hard to imagine that thin (21,23c) road tire fits into disk wheel well and it will be still heavier than caliper brake even if disk brake is improved about the weight... We will do nothing other than seeing what will happen...

Disk クロスバイクが以前より増えてきているような気がする。そして、、、Disk ロードも将来は、、、。
CX バイクには良いだろうと思う。が、しかしDisk ロードについてはまだちょっと、イメージしかねるところがある。
ロードコンポーネントはこれまで、そのシンプルなデザインで、軽く、その機能をインプルーブメントしてきた。Disk がその機能として優れているのは理解できるし、モーターサイクルだけでなく自転車にも良いというのも分かる。しかしロードコンポーネントの魅力的なのはそのシンプルな機能と軽さであると思うし、ロードバイクのあの細い（21、23c）タイヤとDisk Wheel とのマッチング（幾つかの意味で）が良いのかどうか何ともいえない（全部そうなってしまえば気にならなくなるのだろうけど）。また、たとえ重量が軽くなっていったとしても、今までのほうがそれでも軽いのではないか、と思うし。。。
ただ将来起こることに従うしかないのかなあ、、、。

Weld finish spot depends on the welder. I always try to have a spot which is hard to be seen. It should be a hidden spot. Also I try to make it naturally in order not to be a sudden spot. It is a care for the customer.

溶接終了ポイントはウェルダーによって異なる。自分はいつもできる限り見えないポイントに作るように心がけている。それは隠れているほうが良いからである。また突然止まったように見えないよう滑らかに、自然に、、、。それは一つの、カスタマーに対する配慮である。

Mama chari (Mother's bike) - ママチャリ

When I was working in Japan, I also used to work in a bike shop (There is a bike shop next to a factory.).
I repaired many bikes called "mama-chari", which is shopping bike for mothers. I think I repaired more than 3,000 bikes for 4 years as I made frames.
I didn't like it in the biginning because I just wanted to focus on frame building. But I had to do it for one year at least. The boss said "Shopping bike is a basic to learn bikes and you can understand about general people who ride shopping bikes."...
In the now, I think it was a good experience not only learning about high end bikes.

日本の自転車工房でまだ働いていたときに、その工房の隣にママチャリのショップがありそこで修理、販売をフレームつくりをしながらやっていたことがあった。4年間で多分3,000台以上は修理したと思う。　
最初の頃はこの仕事が嫌いであった。フレームつくりに専念したかったからである。しかし会社のボスは”ママチャリは自転車の基礎だから最初に自転車について学ぶのに良い。それからこういった自転車に乗るお客さんについてもよく理解できるから。”と。。。
今となっては、ハイエンドバイクのみの経験だけでなくこういった大半の人が乗る安価な自転車、そしてそのお客さん達とも触れた経験は良かったと思っている。

Another KUALIS CX C1 racer. I again am happy to see him race with his new frame. He has just moved up to C1 from C2. (He may be more vivid than the bike.) I hope he go up more with his KUALIS.

もう一人のKUALIS CX C1 レーサー。さぬきのレースにて。再び、KUALIS が一人のレーサーとともに奮闘しているのが見れてまたまた嬉しい限りである。彼はC1 に昇格されたばかりのレーサー（彼のほうがフレームよりインパクトあるかもしれません）。
これからこのニューバイクとともにさらなる上昇をされる事を期待しています。

Bike school - バイクスクール

There is a bike school to learn bike building, to be a mechanic,,, in the US. Basically, I do not think it is necessary so much. I think you can learn through your study and working in a manufacturer.
But maybe, there will be something good to go to school... It's easy to go and reasonable cost. Also there are many community colleges to learn something like welding.
Recently, I heard there was a bike school in Japan, too. If you finish the school, you may be able to have some skills for bike building... But it's too expensive. 3,000,000yen ($39,000)!!! Who goes there! I don't understand at all.
They are proud of themselves too much? They should think of sharing their skills and knowledge more if they want to pass down to their next generation. I am afraid that Japanese bike industry will go down...

バイクスクールなるものがここアメリカにはある。様々なコースがあって目的におおじて学べるらしい。　基本的に、ぼくはバイクに関する云々を学ぶために学校に通う必要性に疑問がある。そういう事は自分で、そして実際の仕事を通して学ぶべきだと思っているからである。まあそれでも、効率よく何かを得られるのであればそれもありか、とは思うが。。。　気軽に行けるし、コストも安くすむ。またコミュニティーカレッジなどもここアメリカには多いし。。。もちろんそれだけだはプロにはなれないが。

最近、日本でもバイクスクールがあるらしいことを知った。そこをでれば一流のビルダーに成れる（のか？？？）　なによりも驚いたのはその学費である。3百万円！！？？何年かかるのか忘れたが、これは高すぎではないか？どんな人が行くのだろうか？　巨匠（？）様たちの彼らの技術に対するプライドがとんでもなく高いのだろうか？
もし彼らの知識や技術を誰かに、あるいはつぎの世代に残したいと考えるなら、もっと積極的にどんどんシェアしていくべきであると思うのだが。もったいぶる必要性は全くないはずである。
日本発信のバイク（フレームつくり）の将来が不安である。

650C, Ti aero down tube, Di2 internal, trial bike. It's very cool! We have not had an aero down tube long time.
It's very very fun to weld it! This bike's owner is a lady. It's also cool!

チタンエアロダウンチューブ、Di2 インターナル、トライアルバイク。いやー、このボリューム（しかも650C）、ある意味クールだー。（真っ直ぐ突進するには、いいかもしれません。曲がらないのなら、、、）
しばらくこのDT でのオーダー無かったなー（もう消えたモデルだから当然ですけどね。）。
こういうフレーム溶接する（作る）のは非常におもしろい。しかもこのバイクのオーナーはレディーです。くぅ～、これまたクールだー！

The way to be a welder3 - ウェルダーへの道3

3rd step. Practice weldinig (like a frame.) 1. Cope a tube (scrap) 2. Tack and lock it. 3. Start welding. 4. weld round with several stops. (spot of start and stop is same point.) 5. Try to weld with lots of angles until your welding looks like a seamless bead. You may need xxx piecies to practice.
After step3, you can try to weld a stem (simple welding). After stems, you can try a frame, finally...
1,000 frames. After you weld 1,000 frames (many kinds of frames), you may be able to keep a good welding even if you are in a bad condition. Finally, you can be a real professional welder.
You need lots of experience and need time before you become a reliable frame builder.

第三段階。実際のフレーム溶接を模した練習。　1．写真のようにカット、ざぐりをしたものを用意。
2．仮付けをする。3．溶接スタート。4．1周する。（数回にわけて一周し。スタートと同じポイントで止まる。）5．様々な角度のものにトライし、溶接継ぎ目が分からなくなるまで徹底的に練習する。？百ピースは必要でしょう。
この第三段階の後、ステムなどのシンプルな溶接にトライできるでしょう。そしてその後、ついにフレームに。。。
1,000本、とりあえず1,000本様々なタイプのフレームをこなせば、あなたの体調いかんに関わらず、ある一定の良いウェルディングをキープできるようになるでしょう。ついに、プロのウェルダー誕生です。
人から信用してもらえるものつくりが出来るようになるまでには、時間と経験がどうしても必要になります。真剣にやればやるほど、その時その時の未熟さが自分に突きつけられます。そのつどのり超えるしかありません。トライしたい人はがんばってください。
（ここ1年くらいの間に、何人かの人から‘フレームビルダーになりたい’、‘趣味で始めてます’、などのメールをもらいました。参考になれば幸いです。）

The way to be a welder 1 - ウェルダーへの道１

The way to master welding skill. 1. You get a scrap. 2. Clean it. 3. Put weld beeds.
First you get a scrap and clean it. Put the tube on your bench. Tungsten should be out as short as possible.
You start to put beeds with a wire... While welding, you have to try to make a good combination among heat, wire, and speed. You should keep moving your torch 1-1.5mm far from the material...
Try to fill the scrap with weld beeds until you cannot make any beed on it. Try to make 100 pieces, anyway, and if it's not enough, more 100. If it's still not enough, more...
This is the 1st step to master welding.

ウェルディングスキルをマスターする方法。　1．スクラップを用意する。2．それをきれいにする。3．その上に溶接ビードを作っていく。
まずスクラップをきれいにし、ベンチの上にクリップなどで固定する。タングステンは出来るだけ短く出す。溶接、スタート！。。。溶接中は、ヒートと溶棒とトーチの移動速度のマッチングに注意を払いましょう。トーチは約1~1.5mmマテリアルから離れた状態をキープしながら移動する。
スクラップのチューブを溶接ビードで埋め尽くしましょう。（見た感じが気持ち悪くなるまで）それをとりあえず100ピース作ってみましょう。もし十分でないならば、もう100ピース作りましょう。それでもまだ足りないなら、もう、、、
これが第一段階の練習である。

Weld wire - 溶棒

There are many kinds of Ti alloy. We use three different sizes 6Al-4V Ti weld wires. Each one has each different use. You must never put dirty top of wire in your welding. If it is put in a frame, it is a defective item.
You cannot see it from outside, though.

チタンの種類はたくさんある。溶棒には6Al-4Vチタンで3種類の異なったサイズのものを使用する。
それぞれに使用目的があり、使われ方が異なる。溶接中、決して汚れた（変色した）溶棒の先を混入してはいけません。もし入れたなら、、、それは欠陥品です。外からは見えませんが。

If you see some chips after cutting, drilling, you will see how speed, how it was forced, how it was made, and you also see the skill of the craftsman... There is actually lots of information in chips and scraps.

カッティングやドリルの後のいくらかの切りくずを見れば、それらがどのくらいのスピードでどのくらいの力でどのように出来たか、そしてそれを作った人の技術の程なども大体わかる。。。切りくずやスクラップには実はたくさんの情報が入っているのである。

How about disk rotor? Will it be lighter?

将来はロードバイクもDisk ブレーキになる？ような感じである。それは良いと思う。Disk ブレーキはコントローラブルでブレーキとしての性能が良い。モーターサイクルでも実証済みである。（ちなみに大型バイクに乗っていたときは、ブレンボやロッキードが好きなメーカーだったが、、、）しかしヘビーである。もちろん軽量化がどんどん進むだろうが、Disk ローターははたしてどのように進化（軽量化）していくのだろうか？鉄以外に信頼性の高い、かつ軽量な素材に変わる可能性は？

Keep doing something - 何かを続ける事

Last night, I tried to post something on here, but I couldn't. I took a cold medicine and soon after that, I got really sleepy and I slept for a while on my desk withiout doing anything for my post. It was a mistake...
I always try to post something every day (not weekends, holidays) even though it is a molehill.
It is a trck through my work and I believe it leads to something for my future work later (maybe).
By keeping trying to do something, I can see and learn something I don't know, what to do (or not to do), and so on...
Endurance makes you stronger... It will take a long time, but I want to believe it and keep it.

昨晩、ブログ更新をしようとしたができなかった。体調が悪く風邪薬を飲んだとたん、ものすご～く眠くなりそのままパソコンの前に何も出来ずにうつぶせになったまま寝込んでしまった。（アメリカの風邪薬はきつすぎるのか？）　不覚であった。。。
僕はいつも毎日（週末や休みの日以外）ブログを更新するよう勤めている。たとえくだらない事しかなかったとしても。
それは僕の仕事を通しての軌跡であり、後の（今は分からないが）自分の仕事に何かしらつながるだろうと思っているからである。何か一つの事を続けることによって、自分が知らない事や、しなければならない事（あるいは、してはいけない事）などなどに気づいたりも出来る。
継続は力なり、、、それには時間を要する。しかしそれを信じたいし、続けたいと思う。

From Japan to US - 日本からアメリカへ

I will have been working at Seven for 5 years this May. Time passes so quick. Then, I thought how many Japanese have been abroad to learn about frame building so far? In the past, there were some Japanese who went to Itally. How about in US? I do not know anyone else like me in US, anyway. It's too rare...
I originally wanted to go to Itally, but now I think I made a good decision to come to US.
If I wanted to learn brazing, I did not have to go out of Japan. But I was interested in Tig welding, especially welding Ti. US is the best to learn to weld Ti and steel tubing.
I can learn most of the things for frame building by myself, but not welding because I did not want to have an unauthorized way from the beggining. Welding is the most important process for hand made bikes. It determines the quality. I couldn't build a quality frame myself unless I learn welding...
It is said our senses are more accurate than any machine. When can my sense exceed machine work?

Seven に来て以来、この5月で5年になる。時間が過ぎるのは速い。それでふと思ったのだが、これまで何人の日本人がフレームつくりを学ぶ目的で海外に出たのだろう？過去に何人かイタリアに出た人はいたが、アメリカは？とりあえず、自分以外は知らない。ものすごくレアなことだし。。。
自分ももともとはイタリアに行きたかったのだが、今となっては、アメリカに来た事は正解だったと思っている。
もしロウ付けを学びたかったのなら日本を出る必要はなかった。しかし、自分はTig 溶接に興味をもった。特にチタン溶接は非常に高い技術がいるという事も知っていたし。そういう技術を学ぶという意味では、ここアメリカがベストだと思っている。
フレームつくりに関するほとんどのことは自分で学べると思うが、Tig 溶接だけは別だった。最初から”我流”を身に付けたくなかったからである。溶接過程はもっとも大切なプロセスである（ハンドメイドバイクに関して）。この溶接をきちっと学ばない限り、自分ではクオリティーの高いフレームは作れないだろう。
人間の感覚は機械よりも正確だと言われるが、果たして、いつ自分の感覚（技術）が機械を越えるのだろうか？

Di2 internal for steel - スティール　Di2 インターナル仕様

I came to work late today and found someone welded and brazed a steel frame for Di2 internal routing.
I basically think it is better for steel frame to have an external routing. Especially for steel CX bike, it has lots of water and mud all the time you race... But It may look better than Ti frame for internal routing.
Because steel one is brazed the spot of routing, so it looks smooth. (And there are some choices for the small parts.) But I think it is better for stainless steel to have an internal routing, though.

今日は用事で遅く会社に来たら、誰かが丁度スティール（Di2 インターナルルーティング）のロウ付けを終えたばかりのものがあった。自分は基本的にスティールフレームにインターナル仕様はあまり良いとは思わない。特に、CX バイクなどはレースするたびに泥や水を浴びる事になる。

We moved up our surface plate. We do not need to bend down to check frame alignment anymore. It's easy to use it. Welded frame alignment is not changed by the height of surface plate, though.

Tough spot 2 - タフスポット２

Around head tube, it's a tough spot. There is a lot of stress, especially, bottom of down tube and top of top tube. When welding Ti tubing, keep clean them. If it is not clean enough, it may be cracked later... This is a serious matter as always.

ヘッドチューブ周りはタフスポットの一つである。かなりのストレスがそこにはかかる。特にダウンチューブの下側とトップチューブの上側。チタンチュービングを溶接する際はキープ”クリーーン！”である。十分にクリーンな状態でないと、使用後クラックが入る可能性もある。。。これは毎度のことながら重要なことである。

We bought a car last week. It is NISSAN VERSA (2009). It's silver one.
When I was in Japan, I didn't own a car. Actually, I didn't need it. Also I liked more big motorcycles than cars, so I was totally not interested in any car...
But now, I think a car may be convenient... I do not know this idea is good or not. I do not think a society which needs a car to live is good. And in the future, it will not be autmotive age like before... Anyway, now my wife drives everyday.

日本に居るときは自分の車を所有しなかった。事実必要なかったし、なにより大型バイクばかり乗り回していた。四輪（車）に全く興味も無かった。。。

I got a few samples of KUALIS logo head badge. KUALIS logo motifs letter "K" and I designed it imagining a Japanese seal. But this head badge logo looks different a little from the actual one. The balance of the lines were changed by laser cut. I have to chanege the dimension of the logo for laser cut... And I will re-think about the balance of the size, too.

Di2 internal routing is becoming popular. We have to make the route inside a frame for it. But for steel frames (not stainless), it is not a good idea to have an internal routing. It should have an external routing, I think...

Y's KUALIS was cleared. It looks good! Through some KUALIS frames, I especially have paid attention about modifying the decal and logo design in order to fit and look better at any spot and with any size on a frame. It has gotten better little by little. It's almost completed to design KUALIS logo and decal.
High stiffness, light-weight KUALIS cross is almost completed.
(KUALIS logo motifs letter 'K' and the design is based on a Japanese seal. Seal has a history more than 1500 years in Japan.)

BB is one of the most stressful spots. ST, DT, and CS are all joined on BB. BB is also the hardest spot to keep the alignment after welding. Many times and lots of heat are put on BB. BB is the impact area directly from pedaling.
BB is a tough spot.

BB （ボトムブラケット）は最もストレスフルなスポットの一つである。ST, DT ,CS がBB 上で連結される。BB はまた溶接後のアライメントをキープするのが最も難しい場所でもある。何回も溶接の度に熱が加えられる。BB はペダリングの影響をもろに受ける部分である。

Shimano CX70 - シマノCX70

I chose Shimano CX 70 canti brake for my cross bike. But it seems something different than old one.
In technical information in 2011, it says the distance between center of brake boss and cable guide should be minimum 135mm. But this new CX70... It needs more than 150mm actually. It's longer than old one.
For frame builders, this is a matter. We might have to change something standard to place small parts. Minimum frame size which can be placed canti post might be changed... Basically, I think Shimano should inform technical info. when they produce a new product.

シマノCX70 のカンチブレーキを自分のクロスバイク用に選んだ。のだが、いままでの古いものと何か違うようである。2011年のテクニカルインフォメーションではブレーキボスのセンターからアウター受けまでの距離が最小135mmとなっているのだが今回のニューCX70 は実際150mm以上は必要な感じである。これはフレームを作っている人間にとっては問題である。小物をフレームにつけるときの基準が変わってくる。カンチポストが付けられる最小フレームサイズも変えなければいけない。
こういう事はシマノから新製品が出たときに一緒にインフォメーションとして知らせてもらいたいものである。それともシマノはそんなこと気にしていないとか？

Welding check - ウェルディングチェック

Sometimes we will need to check our welding. After welding some test pieces, cut the pieces, check penetration of the welding, how it was heated, welding speed is ok?, and so on... the small difference how you put heat and speed makes a serious difference sometimes. The more you want to have the best one, the more welding gets a very sensitive work.

たまには自分達の溶接結果をチェックすることも必要だろう。いくつかテストピースを溶接して、それらを切断し、溶け込み具合をチェックし、どのように熱が加えられたか、溶接スピードは適正か？などなどチェックすることが必要だろう。どのようなスピードでどのくらいの熱量でという小さな違いが時にはシリアスな溶接結果の違いを生じさせることもある。　
ベストなウェルディングを望めば望むほどそれはよりセンシティブなものになっていく。適正溶接については説明しても説明しきれないほどである。

Paint design in the future - これからのペイントデザイン

It seems there are many many patterns of paint for bike frame and we already had most of them? These days some high-end bikes are not painted so much. (Just black, matte black...) Picture, patterns... Sometimes letters and lines are main parts of paint design like SPEEDVAGEN.

And next? What is next like? Maybe it is not paint (color)?

数限りなくバイクフレームのペイントデザインはあるように思えるし、またほとんど出尽くした感もある。

最近のハイエンドバイクの幾つかはそんなにペイントされてなかったり（ただ、ブラック、マットブラックといったように、、、今までもそうだったかな？）。　絵や柄をペイントするもの、バイク自体を色で塗り分けるといったものから、SPEEDVARGEN のように文字と線（時に線が太くなりパネルにもなる）がペイントデザインのメイン要素になったり。。。

次はどんなの？　ペイント（カラー）ではないとか？

V-brake Mtn. - V- ブレーキMtn.

These days we rarely have V-brake Mtn. frame. Disk brake is more controllable.
But V-brake system makes bike weight lighter. Some people like V-brake more than disk.

最近めっきりV-ブレーキ使用のMtn. のオーダーを見なくなった。当然かもしれないが、Disk のほうがコントローラブルだし。。。　しかしV ブレーキのほうがバイクは軽くなる。今でもV のほうを好む人もいる。

Universal CAD Vectorworks - 万能CAD Vectorworks

I bought this CAD Vectorworks to make drawings about 7 years ago. This CAD is basically for architecture designers. It works as both 2D and 3D CAD. The latest version is not almost changed.
This CAD is very smart and useful, and can work fast. If you try to design and make detail drawings for a house, you will have 60 to 70 drawings. But for this CAD, it is a pice of cake...
I always use this CAD for bike design. It can be dependable! (Design bikes or parts is much simpler than design buildings though.)

7年ほど前に、設計図面製作用にこのCAD Vectorworks を購入した。このCAD は基本的に建築デザインに最も適したものである。２D と3Dの両方の機能を持ち合わしている。ちなみに最新ヴァージョンも自分のとほとんど同じ機能性である。（つまりあまり変わっていない。）
このCAD は非常に賢く、仕事が速い。例えば家一軒設計する際に、60枚から70枚の図面をひかなければならない、、、なんて仕事もなんなくこなしてしまう。
自分はいつもバイクのデザインをするときはこのCAD を使う。非常に信頼性が高い。（バイクのデザインは建築に比べれば、ずっとシンプルですけどね）

I went for a ride with my wife to Concord last weekend. I have not ridden with her long time because she has been busy for her study. Concord is a small town in the west of Boston. She is still busy for her work, but I hope she could refresh some by riding.

先週末にコンコードまで久しぶりにかみさんと一緒に軽いサイクリングをした。そういえば、ひーさしかみさんと一緒に走ってなかった。勉強づけだったのでしかたがないが。　コンコードはボストンから西に行ったところにある小さな町である。　彼女はまだまだ忙しいが、多少のリフレッシュにはなったでしょう。

Design and Art - デザインとアート

Design and Art. I like both. Sometimes both get very close. But I think there is a certain difference between them.
If you are an artist, you may be able to do anything with your feeling to express something. If you are a designer, you may still be able to do many things with your feeling, but you will have to have something responsibility to the sosiety (the customer, too). This is a big difference, I think. Basically, design work needs some logical thinking, too...
I like both design and art. Both are fun and sometimes hard, but I think I want to stay a frame builder and at the same time, have to stay as a designer.

デザインとアート。両方好きである。時にそれらは、非常に近い関係になることもある。しかしそれらの間にはあるはっきりした違いがあると思っている。
もしあなたが一人のアーティストだとすると、感情のままになんでも作品をつくることが出来るかもしれない。　もしあなたがひとりのデザイナーであるなら、たくさんの部分でアートにちかいことが出来るかもしれないが、その社会に対して何らかの責任を持たなければならない（カスタマーに対しても）。
これはひとつの大きな違いだと思っている。基本的に、デザインワークはロジカルな考え方も必要となってくるし。。。
デザインとアート、両方好きであるが自分はフレームビルダーでありたいのと同時にデザイナーの立場にいたいし、いなければならないのではないかと思っている。

Steel BB 30 - スティールBB30

Steel BB30, single speed, and belt drive. This is the first steel BB30 I have ever had. Steel BB is 158g and Ti BB is 90g. 68g heavier. It is easier to keep the aligment after welding than Ti BB30.
For stiffness, Steel BB30 is 85% stiffer and 75% heavier than Ti BB30. How do you like it?

スティールBB30、シングルスピード、ベルトドライブ。スティールBB30 は今回が初めて。チタンBB30（９０g）より６８g重い。（けっこう重いね）　しかしチタンよりウェルディング後のアライメントをキープしやすい。
ちなみにスティールBB30 のほうが、８５％剛性増し、そして７５％重量も増し。いかがなもんでしょう？

ハンドメイドでバイクフレームをつくっている会社はたくさん存在する。中にはわりと大きな規模のところもあるが、そのほとんどが一人から１０人程度の小さい規模でつくっているところがほとんどである。
大きい会社（といってもそんなに大きいところはないが）と少人数の小さい会社（工房といったほうが良いかもしれない）とではその生産プロセスのベースが異なる。小さいところでは、小ロットでの生産になるため効率という点では良いとは言えないが、より丁寧な扱い、生産プロセスであると言えると思う。（もちろん工房にもよるが、、、）
一方、大きいところは資金がそれなりにあるので、機械の導入量や人の数が増え、分担作業により効率はよくなるが、その生産プロセスは大量生産の形式をベースとせざるを得ないところがある。大きな生産フローの中で見れば、特に問題は無い様に見えるが、詳細にプロセス一つ一つを見ていくと（個人的に）アラが見えてくる（効率性やコスト削減がどうしても優先される）。　
カスタムメイドでバイクフレームをつくる場合、（大手メーカーとは異なるスタイルなので）いわゆる”少数精鋭”によりクオリティやデザインを追求していく形のほうがむしろ良いような気がする。この少数精鋭は一人なのか二人なのか十人がよいのかなんとも言えないところではあるのだが、そういった本当に”少数精鋭”な小さなバイクブランドがもっとでてくるとおもしろいと思う。

We got two Ti road frames from Japan at the same time. I welded one of them and the other one was welded by Tim. We did a careful work for these two Japanese so that these guys can get satisfaction with these two frames.

It is hard to design logos. Sometimes it looks cheap depends on the design, and sometimes it looks professional...
The size, clearance of the letters, balance, beauty, and sound, etc, etc... It is hard and takes time to design a good logo, but very very interesting.

ロゴのデザインはなかなか難しい。デザインによっては、安っぽく見えたり、プロフェッショナルにみえたり。。。ブランド名などもそうである。　文字のサイズや太さ、間隔などのバランス、美しさ、響きなどなど、、、。
一つの優れたロゴやブランド名をデザインするのには時間もかかるし、難しいが、非常に興味深く面白いものだと思う。

There are some workshops and frame builders around Boston area. Firefly is one of the great workshops.
I have thought I wanted to visit Firefly since they started their business and I visited them last week, finally. They were nice guys and their products were great, too. Especially, Tyler's welding was so great! I think I could learn something from his welding style. I post some pictures. They are careful frame builders.

Stress on road frame - ロードフレームにかかるストレス

This is an example which shows stress on a road frame.
1. Constant speed condition
    TT- 37%, DT- 19%, ST- 28%, CS- 8.5%, SS- 7.5%

2. Climbing condistion
   TT- 11.5%, DT- 59%, ST- 18%, CS- 7.5%, SS- 4%

3. Braking condition
   TT- 25%, DT- 58%, ST- 8%, CS- 6%, SS- 3%

(*Stress on HT is not included. HT always has lots of stress.)
Front end has much more stress than rear end. SS doesn't have so much stress. It can be small diameter and thinner thickness.

It is a long frame and looks heavy. Lots of work!

スティールタンデムバイクである。スティールタンデムに関しては、いつもティムが溶接している。チタンタンデムよりハードである。なが～いフレーム、重そうである（実際、重い）。手間と時間がかかるバイクである。

Smallest road frame - 最小サイズのロードフレーム

The size is 28cm (C-C). It's the smallest 700c road frame I have ever seen. I do not know if the customer wants or the bike shop recommends this wheel size. 650c or 26in wheel is better for this frame size? The customer's thigh may touch the rear brake, too. Maybe or maybe not... I am not sure, though. But it is a very small size road.

サイズ２８cm（C-C）の最小７００c　ロードフレーム（今まで見た中で）である。カスタマーが望んだのかそれともショップの人が薦めたのか定かではないが、６５０cか２６in ホイールのほうがベターではないかと思うのだが。カスタマーの太ももがリアブレーキに接触しそうな気もするし。
ものすごく小さいロードフレームである。

Theorem of Cause and Effect - 原因と結果の法則

My wife got a job offer from one of the big four accounting firms (NY office) as an auditor and accepted it. She starts to work next October in NY after finishing school.
She quit her job 4 years ago in Japan and came to US with me. She sometimes must have suffered about it... But she made her new goal and she has made lots of efforts so far. She has spent her time on almost only studying. She has not had fun so much so far. Study, study, study... with her goal. She has been patient a lot... I am proud of her so much.
I have had a belief for about eight years. That is "Theorem of Cause and Effect". Nothing happens without any cause. That means there is a certain reason to happen for everything (no exception). There is no mistake in the process of the thorem. I believe everyone is now making something cause which will become something effect in the future. And every cause is in each person although it is a good cause or bad, not in others. No one can get a goal without any effort in daily life.
I believe this (theorem of cause and effort) works about past, present, and future for everything.

私の妻が４大大手会計ファームの一つからジョブオファーをもらった。大学院を卒業し、来年の10月からニューヨークで仕事（会計監査）を始めることになる。
彼女は4年前に自身の仕事を辞め、このアメリカに私とともに来た。時にはその事を後悔もしただろうし、いろいろと精神的にも苦しんだに違いない。しかし新たな目標をもち、それに向けてひたすら忍耐と努力をこれまで重ねてきた。彼女の時間のほぼ全てを目標に向けて、勉強に打ち込んできた。ほとんどこの期間たいした楽しみも持たなかった。忍耐と努力でここまできたと言ってよい。
そしてついに目標を達成した。自分のかみさんのことながら、彼女をとても誇りに思う。
ここ約8年くらい自分の中に一つの信念を持っている。それは”原因と結果の法則”である。いかなる事も原因なしに何かが発生することはない（例外もない）。　全ての人が今、将来に生じるであろう結果となるための原因をせっせと作っているということである。そしてその起こりうる結果の原因は全て自分の中にある。よい事も悪い事も自分の中に、他人のなかには無い。そしてこの法則の過程にはいかなる間違いも起きない。彼女が目標を達成したことも、自分にこれまで起こってきた事もこれから起こりうる事も全てこの”原因と結果の法則”に従っていると思う。

I almost made the drawings for next KULIS frames last weekend. Especially, I needed to check the SS and CS about the taper, thickness, and bending locations to make better use for the tubing.

先週末、つぎのKUALIS バイクの図面をだいたい終わらせた。特に、CS とSS についてはより良い使用ができるように、そのテーパー具合や、ベンドのロケーションや、厚さなどのチェックが必要だった。

We use our welding machine "Miller". Our machine is a foot pedal style. It is an old style now. Actually, in Japan, we cannot see this style in any Japanese welding machine manufacturers. But I like this foot pedal style because I can have very sensitive welding, and very adjustable. The junctions to weld in a frame are complicated. I want to keep using this foot pedal style as my welding machine.

ウェルディングマシーンはアメリカのメーカー”Miller" 社のものを使用している。いろいろなタイプのマシーンがあるのだが、フットペダル式（足でアクセルを踏むようにそのふみ加減で調節する）を使っている。このスタイルのものは今となっては古いかもしれない。事実、日本では、このスタイルのものは見ることすら出来ない。しかし、シルキーでかつ繊細で、クリアーで美しい溶接ビードをつくるには、はっきり言ってこのタイプのマシーン以外は個人的に考えられない。溶接中の微妙なアジャストが可能である。バイクフレームは溶接箇所が複雑である。日本のP社の溶接ビードが無骨なのはこのウェルディングマシーンの影響も要因の一つだろうと思う。

I got most of the tubing for next KUALIS frames. Those are cross and Mtn frames. I just need to wait a little more for something, though. While I wait for it, I will make all drawings for them to start.

It's a hard spot to weld.

Very narrow!

Welding a big frame is comfortable and difficult as well. The most difficult and highest skilled welding spot is the junction of ST/SS in a huge road frame. It is too narrow space between SS. What's more, a road SS's wall thickness is very thin. It is easy to make a hole if you are not a skilled welder. It's very difficult... So I like to weld it.

ばかでかいフレームを溶接することは快適でもあるが、同時に難しくもある。最も難しくハイスキルドな溶接スポットがこうしたでかいサイズのロードフレームのST とSSの接合部分である。シートステーどうしの隙間が狭すぎる。おまけにロードSSはチューブの肉厚が薄い。訓練されたウェルダーでないと簡単にタングステンの先をチューブに接触させてしまい、穴をあけてしまう。非常に難しいスポット。。。　そんな所を溶接するのが好きである。

Sometimes some customers name a welder to weld their frames. Our frames are by handmade, so each welder has each style and the welding apperance is different. This is not only about welding, also machining and finishing. They show some differences slightly . That is an interesting point for handmade bikes.

わずかではあるが、カスタマーによっては、ウェルダーを指定してくる時もある（当然、そのウェルダーが溶接することになる）。我々のフレームはもちろんハンドメイドである。ウェルダーも一人一人スタイルが異なり、ビード外観も多少異なる。”癖”のようなものがある。これはウェルディングだけではなく、マシーニング、フィニッシングにもわずかではあるが、現れてくる。ハンドメイドバイクの面白い点のひとつであると思う。

This is a frame my co-worker made for a bike show. So it is a show bike. Some gold leaf was put on the frame for the decals. Gold leaf!! So the frame has gold leaf! It is truly a show bike.

これは仕事仲間のブライアンがバイクショー用につくったラグドフレームである。（もちろん彼のバイクブランドのものである）　金箔がデカールの部分に貼られている。そう、金箔である。本物である。

Mr. M's steel disk cross - Mさんのスティールdisk クロス

I got a Seven's steel disk cross from Japan. I welded it with a lot of love. Some Japanese like Japanese "Keirin" builders' steel lugged brazed frames. But some Japanese like Tig welded frames. I like both, but maybe I prefer to Tig welded frames because it is more rational way and simple. And it allows non-limited tubing combinations to design.

日本では競輪フレームのビルダーが作る、ロー付けによるラグドスティールを好む人達も結構いるし、またTig ウェルドされたフレームを好むひとも多い。　ちなみに自分は両方好きだが、Tig ウェルドのほうがより好きである。なぜなら、その合理的な手法とシンプルさのためであり、そしてチュービングのコンビネーションに制限がなくデザインできるからである。

Lugged brazing and Tig welding - ラグドロウ付けとTig 溶接

There are two main ways to join two metal tubes for a frame. They are brazing (lugged, fillet) and Tig welding. Both ways can have a very strong connection. Especially, lugged brazing is the strongest way (but it will be heavy, though.). Tig welding has a very tight connection and strong.
Each way has each good point, but the most important thing to make a strong frame is in the process, not the way.

メタルフレームのチューブを接合させる方法としては大きく二つの方法がある。ロウ付け（ラグド、ラグレス）、そしてTig 溶接である。これらはみな強力な接合部分をつくる。特にラグドのロウ付けによるフレームは最も強度がある（同時に、ヘビーにはなるが、、、）。Tig はチューブ同士を非常にタイトに接合することができ、かつ、強力である。
それぞれに長所があるが、一本の強いフレームをつくるための最も重要なことは、その方法ではなく、それぞれの溶接をする前、最中のプロセスのなかにある。

Wing chun tournament - 詠春拳トーナメント

I posted that I am learning Chinese martial art "Wing chun" before. I have learned it about 4 months.
It is said it takes time to master Wing chun system. I like to practice this Wing chun system very much because the system is very smart, effective and no waste of action...
Last night I was recommeded from the Sifu (master) that I should join a Wing chun national tournament next year. Usually it needs 2 years, 3 years-training to join a tournament, I think. Actually the students who join a tournament have more than 3 years-training. I do not think I deserve a practitioner who can join a tournament. But I said "OK". I regret a little bit that I accepted it. But I have time before the tounament. I may improve more (?)...

以前、自分がいまチャイニーズマーシャルアート（詠春拳）を学んでいることについてポストしたことがあるが、丁度始めてから、4ヶ月になる。
この詠春拳をマスターするにはかなりの年月がかかると言われている。つまり難しいらしい。自分はこの詠春拳の練習がすごくすきである。なぜなら、この詠春拳システムのスマートさ、効果的さ、無駄な動きをいっさい排除しているそのスタイルに魅力を感じるからである。（それと多分日本には詠春拳のマスターがいないということも）
昨晩、マスターから、来年のトーナメントへの参加を勧められた。通常トーナメント参加で十分に力を発揮できるまでには、2，3年のトレーニングは必要である。事実、自分の周りにいる生徒でトーナメントに参加する者は3年以上のトレーニングを積んでいる。正直言って、自分はまだ参加するに値しないと思っている。しかし、とっさに”OK"と言ってしまった。。。少し後悔をしている。が、それまでに時間はある。多分インプルーブできるだろう。と思う事にした。

Retain a beginner's mind - 初心忘るべからず

次のKUALIS カスタマーのためのチュービングの一部。

There is a proverb " Retain a beginner's mind " in Japan. I have trained my work so far and I have always thought about frame making even in my free time. I started my blog about it. I made my bike brand and got some orders although I still do not fhinish organizing my order system. I thank to them.
So now I should keep in mind " Retain a beginner's mind ". I think I always want to be honestly myself and to my customers.
I will start to work for next KUALIS customer around the end of this month. (He is also a cross racer.)

”初心忘るべからず”ということわざがある。自分はこれまで自分の仕事に関するトレーニングを積んできた。年がら年中フレームつくりのことばかり考えてきた。それをブログにしてみた。最近自分のバイクブランド　”KUALIS"　をおこした。まだ自分のオーダーシステムをオーガナイズし終えていないにも関わらず、既に何件かオーダーも入った。ありがたい事である。
ここで自分に言い聞かせておきたいのが、この”初心忘るべからず’である。自分に正直に、そしてカスタマーに対しても常に正直であることを自分に今、刻み付けておきたいと思う。
今月末あたりから次のKUALIS カスタマーのフレーム製作に入る予定である。（彼もまたシクロクロスのレーサーである。）

I am always happy whenever I have orders from Japan. Today I had a frame which is ordered from Japan.
When people in Japan buy Seven's frames, the price of the frame is very expensive, much more expensive than those in US. I always think that I have to do my best to live up to their expectations.

日本からオーダーが入るといつも嬉しい気持ちになる。今日一台日本からのオーダーを扱った。
日本の人がSeven のフレームを購入するとき、高額な値段になる。アメリカで購入する人達よりもずっと高くなる。それでいつも思うのだが、彼らの期待に答えられるようベストを尽くさなければいけない、と。

I cleared and polished a little. So I completed this frame. I will ship it next week. I just hope this KUALIS work great for the customer and he is happy with it. And I made sure again that this feeling is the most important thing to make things.
I really like Rapha pink. It's is a nice pink!

クリアコート終了、ポリッシュ少し（ほとんど必要なかった）。このフレームは終了である。来週、シッピング（写真を撮ったら）予定。　後は、ただただこのKUALIS がカスタマーのために活躍してくれることとカスタマーが満足してくれる事を望むだけである。　またこの気持ちがものをつくる人間にとって一番重要だともいまさらながら感じた。
しかし、Rapha のピンクはナイスピンクやね！個人的にこのピンクはかなり好きである。クールやね！

KUALIS cross 6 - KUALIS クロス６

ペイント（カラーリング）終了。明日早朝、クリアコートをする。クリアコートをした後はさらにつややかで”ルックスグレイト！”になるだろう。
